Crooked Conduct
A corrupt Board Of Education works for none of us.
We are being cheated in plain sight - but some of us are paying attention.
Next year, the East Islip School District will be cutting programs for students.
The district will be dropping two different Math Lab classes that help students who are struggling in math and will also be dropping AP Classes that enrich our top academic students and that help them be competitive for university applications.
The district did, however, create a new position, approved at the last Board of Education meeting on 3/27, for Teacher on Special Assignment - "Student Absences Management Support Teacher."
Yes, you read that right. Sal Ciampi.
Football coach.
History teacher.
Husband of board member Jessica Ciampi.
And now the newly minted HS “Student Absences Management Support Teacher” with an annual income of $146,541.
No where in that description is “history teacher.”
Suffice it to say, his primary job will no longer be teaching.
According to ZipRecruiter, this is a position that tracks student tardiness or absence (which can and is frequently being done by computer programs). It is essentially a secretarial job, and at the county or state level, would require a clerk typist certification. It would likely pay in the range of $40-$60,000 annually.
The enforcement of the consequences of tardiness are also carried out by the attendance officer in some cases, generally in large districts. This is a task that the HS assistant principal and the attendance office already carry out - people that the district already pays.
As far as we are aware, the attendance problem at East Islip is no better or worse than the surrounding districts.
In addition to his new administrative position, Mr. Ciampi will maintain his additional contracts as
the highest paid Football coach on Long Island at $11,317.54
the highest paid Baseball coach on Long Island at $8,966.81
Summer Physical Fitness / Weight Training advisor to the tune of $3,800
That adds up to a little more than $24,000 on top of the $146,541 our taxes will be paying to not help serve students in the classroom.
Get Elon and DOGE on the case in East Islip - this is waste, fraud, and abuse.
This is corruption.
Shame on our district for redistributing our tax dollars to serve not the students, but one family who sits on the board.
Shame on our Board of Education for unanimously voting for this.
